Geometric Modelling

Geometric Modeling is that field within Computer Science which is concerned with the efficient processing of geometric information on a computer.

Since geometric entities as curves, surfaces and solids are needed in many applications, the basic technologies developed in Geometric Modeling lead to innovations and improvements in these areas.

Application areas of Geometric Modeling are among others:

  • Manufacturing in a computer-integrated environment
  • Simulation of phenomena involving geometric entities
  • Visualization of data sets of various origin
  • Styling without the need for drawings or physical models
  • Motion planning and control

Geometric Modeling combines techniques from Computer Science, Mathematics and Engineering and attracts researchers with different scientific background. The diversity of the field requires high quality seminars of limited size focused on major aspects of Geometric Design in addition to large conferences as e.g. the SIAM conference.

Three previous Dagstuhl seminars on Geometric Modeling were very successful, being the only ones of their kind with focus on the computer science aspects of the field in one symposium.

These seminars brought together the leading experts in the field for exchanging ideas and promoting further research. Each of these conferences resulted in a refereed proceedings volume, consisting of high quality, full length research papers, published by Springer.

As a strongly application oriented field Geometric Modeling has always changed its focus and broadened its scope in order to meet new requirements. Currently, the following areas are considered to be most important and should therefore be covered during the seminar

  • Reverse Engineering, i.e. the automatic generation of a CAD/CAM model from a physical 3D-object
  • Geometric models for scientific simulation and animation
  • Multiresolution methods for complex geometric objects
  • Variational Design, i.e. the construction of geometric objects based on optimality constraints typically formulated as a variational problem
  • Geometric algorithms and data structures
  • Design aspect of large systems for geometric processing
