This GI Dagstuhl Seminar addresses the emerging field of Human-Workflow Interaction in Data Analysis Workflows (DAWs), focusing on how human researchers interact with increasingly complex, data-intensive, and computationally mediated workflow systems. While DAWs are essential for modern scientific research across domains such as biology, physics, medicine, and geography, they remain cognitively demanding and require continuous human interpretation, decision-making, and methodological adaptation. The seminar explores how Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), workflow engineering, visualization, explainability, and AI-assisted methodologies can be combined to design workflow systems that are not only efficient and reproducible, but also transparent, learnable, and genuinely human-centered.
The seminar aims to bring together early-career researchers from HCI, workflow systems, software engineering, and domain sciences to discuss the challenges and opportunities arising from collaborative human-workflow interaction. Key topics include cognitive workload, workflow usability, AI-supported workflow design, explainability, metadata and interaction strategies, and methodological foundations for studying human-centered DAWs. Through interdisciplinary exchange and collaborative group work, the seminar seeks to establish shared methodologies, foster sustainable collaborations, and initiate a new research movement at the intersection of HCI and workflow systems research. By connecting researchers from diverse backgrounds and application domains, the seminar aims to develop conceptual and technological foundations for future human-centered data analysis workflows.
