While it is possible to describe data after it has been collected, based on what is known, there are ways in which data can be characterised to be more easily useful in broader terms, employing standards such as the Data Documentation Initiative Cross-Domain Integration (DDI-CDI). Standard models for data description provide us with a foundation for understanding how data can be viewed not just as the resulting artefact of an experiment or process, but as the critical resource which they have become in the modern computational landscape. When data, metadata, and the models used to structure these are consumed, this is often done using standards specific to the type of use: for the purposes of FAIR sharing, we need to provide a broad-based model which can be used across these applications. This workshop will explore how this can be practically achieved.
