Dagstuhl Seminars

LZI Junior Researchers

Concept

Schloss Dagstuhl wishes to enable the participation of junior scientists with a specialization fitting for the respective Dagstuhl Seminar, even if they are not on the radar of the organizers.

Thus, in seminars participating in the program, a certain – very small – number of spots may be available for outstanding applicants.

To be eligible, an applicant must be:

  • new to Dagstuhl, (i.e., not having accepted a Dagstuhl Seminar invitation yet),
  • at most five years after graduating with their first PhD (or equivalent) or at least two years into their first PhD program,
  • currently doing research that lies in the field of the seminar, and
  • unrelated to the seminar’s organizers (e.g., not working or having worked in an organizer’s group or having published with them).

A successful application just results in an invitation to the seminar, travel costs and the seminar fee will still be incurred and will not be reimbursed by Schloss Dagstuhl.

Applications

Applications are to be directed to the Dagstuhl Office (service@dagstuhl.de) before the deadline mentioned on the seminar’s website and must include the seminar's number in the subject line of the email. Applications must be in english and in the form of a one-to-two-page pdf file that contains the following information:

  • using the relation to your current research, a short statement of what you expect from your participation, and what you can potentially contribute to the seminar;
  • a short academic CV;
  • the applicant’s
    • family name,
    • given name,
    • current affiliation’s postal address,
    • academic degree,
    • PhD degree award date (if applicable),
    • PhD degree university (if applicable),
    • PhD thesis title (or prospective title), and the name and affiliation of the PhD advisor.

Note that Schloss Dagstuhl might pass the application on to the organizers of the Dagstuhl Seminar. The Scientific Director, in accordance with the organizers, will review such applications and make a decision after the deadline. We should like to emphasize again that the number of eligible participants is very limited.

Cooperation with the Heidelberg Laureate Forum

Since 2014, Schloss Dagstuhl has been cooperating with the Heidelberg Laureate Forum (HLF). Each fall, HLF organizes a week-long event in Heidelberg that brings together about 200 young talented researchers in mathematics and computer science from all over the world with the very elite of their fields, such as Fields medallists or Turing award winners. Part of Dagstuhl's cooperation with HLF consists of letting a small number of selected young HLF participants take part in a Dagstuhl Seminar – an additional bonus to the HLF participation. Dagstuhl's mathematical sister, Oberwolfach, has a similar arrangement with HLF

Applications through this program are possible only for HLF participants of the current year. Details of the application process and which Dagstuhl Seminars can be applied for will be announced to the HLF participants in an email by the HLF Foundation in due time.
