Dagstuhl Publishing Releases Statement on the Use of Generative AI

Kategorien:
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming the ways in which research is written, reviewed, and communicated. To address both the opportunities and the challenges associated with these technologies, Dagstuhl Publishing (Schloss Dagstuhl – Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik) has published a new Statement on the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI).

Dieser Beitrag ist leider nur auf Englisch verfügbar.

The statement outlines clear principles for the responsible use of GenAI in scientific publishing, emphasizing integrity, transparency, and human accountability. While GenAI tools may support authors, editors, and the editorial office (for example in language improvement, formatting, or structuring), they cannot replace human judgement. Authors, editors, and reviewers remain fully responsible for the content they create and evaluate, and GenAI systems cannot be credited as authors or co-authors.

Special attention is given to disclosure requirements, the handling of data and visual material, data protection, and ethical standards. In particular, the use of GenAI during peer review is strictly prohibited in order to safeguard confidentiality, independence, and trust in the evaluation process.

This policy is based on established recommendations from the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) and will be reviewed regularly as GenAI technologies continue to evolve.

The full statement is now available on our website and applies to all publications handled by Dagstuhl Publishing: https://drops.dagstuhl.de/docs/gen-ai.
