Motivation

Work is entering a new era shaped by generative AI. As artificial intelligence becomes a collaborator rather than a mere tool, longstanding assumptions about human agency, authorship, and accountability are being redefined. Tasks once requiring clear human initiative or creative intent are now shared, negotiated, or even co-produced with AI systems. This shift raises profound questions for how we design, evaluate, and govern human–AI collaboration across domains of knowledge work, creative work, and manual work.

This Dagstuhl Seminar aims to bring together researchers from both academia and industry who work in the fields of Human–Computer Interaction (HCI), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), AI, cognitive science, economics, and ethics to explore how collaboration between humans and AI can be made productive, meaningful, transparent, and responsible. We will examine the emerging boundaries between assistance and co-authorship, delegation and accountability, as well as the implications of AI agency for skill development, trust, ownership, and wellbeing in the workplace.

Key questions include:

  • How do we design systems that enable shared agency and mutual understanding between humans and AI?
  • How should authorship, attribution, and responsibility be defined in AI-augmented work?
  • How can human–AI collaboration promote equity, creativity, and wellbeing, rather than amplify existing disparities?
  • Which skills must workers develop, and systems support, to facilitate human–AI collaboration for improving work performance?
  • How might we design human–AI collaborations in the workplace to not only improve performance but also preserve and promote job meaningfulness?
  • How can we design AI systems that focus on AI-human collaborations and uphold rights, ownership, and accountability?

Through interdisciplinary discussions and hands-on sessions, participants will co-develop frameworks and research agendas to move from human–AI interaction to genuine collaboration that shapes a future of work that is not only intelligent but also ethical, inclusive, and human-centered.
