Over a 5-year period, the INEX (INitiative for the Evauation of XML retrieval) interactivce track has gathered data (logs, questionnaires, observation notes) from more than 400 search sessions where users interact with systems which present search results on different levels of granularity. This presentation will summarize and discuss findings on the use and value of document context when users attempt to decide the relevance of retrieved material. In particular, this will be discussed in the context of search effort, and the value and ability of log data to determine search effort will be considered.
